Bode's Nebula (M81) in Ursa Major
When I was a kid, I recall sitting transfixed by a two page black and white spread in a book of the universe, published by Life magazine.
It displayed an image of M81 and M82 taken by the great 48 inch Schmidt on Mt Palomar. It is not too unlike
the wonderful color image more recently taken by Rob Gendler. Anyway, that view of M81 has remained with me and continues to symbolize the idealized galaxy.
